Zanskar Valley with Umlung LA 8N 9D

Phuktal Gompa, also known as Phuktal Monastery, is a Buddhist monastery nestled amidst the remote Lungnak Valley in the southeastern region of Zanskar, Ladakh, India. The name Phuktal itself translates to "cave of liberation" in the endangered Zangskari dialect, reflecting the monastery's unique location and purpose.

Standing tall at 5,520 meters (18,110 ft), Gumbok Rangjan is a sacred place for the local inhabitants who practice Tibetan Buddhism. They consider it to be a "God's Mountain". The peak is visible from the village of Kargyak, which is about 16 kilometers to the north. The base of the mountain sits at around 4,500 meters (14,800 ft).
